Choosing shutter speed for video

What shutter speed should I use for video?

A 180° shutter is a conventional starting point. At 25 fps this gives 1/50 sec. Different angles are valid creative choices for softer or sharper motion.

What is the 180-degree shutter rule?

It keeps the exposure open for half of each frame interval. “Double the frame rate” refers to the shutter-speed denominator: 25 fps corresponds to about 1/50 sec.

How is shutter angle calculated?

Exposure time equals shutter angle divided by 360 × frame rate. In reverse, shutter angle equals 360 × frame rate × exposure time.

Should shutter speed always be double the frame rate?

No. The 180° convention often looks natural, but wider angles add blur and narrower angles make motion crisper. Choose deliberately for the scene.

How do shutter speed and frame rate affect motion blur?

At a fixed frame rate, a faster shutter or smaller angle records less movement in each frame. A slower shutter or wider angle records more movement.

How can I reduce flicker under artificial lighting?

Under 50Hz lighting, 1/50 and 1/100 sec are useful starting points; under 60Hz, try 1/60 or 1/120 sec. LEDs, screens and dimmers may use different PWM frequencies, so test the actual light.

Do I need an ND filter for video?

In bright conditions, ND filtration can let you retain the aperture and shutter angle you want without overexposing. The needed strength depends on scene brightness, aperture and ISO.

Video shutter questions

Is 172.8° useful at 24 fps?

Yes. At 24 fps it produces exactly 1/50 sec, which can be a useful 50Hz-lighting starting point while remaining close to 180° motion blur.

Does a flicker-safe shutter speed guarantee no flicker?

No. Mains frequency is only one factor. LEDs, screens, dimmers and PWM-controlled fixtures can cycle at other frequencies, so always test the actual setup.

Are my settings uploaded or stored?
