Print resolution guide
PPI means pixels per inch and describes an image’s digital resolution. DPI describes printer ink dots. People often say DPI when sizing an image, but PPI is the value this calculator uses.
More pixels allow a larger print at the same PPI. Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by PPI; the same formula applies to height.
At normal reading distance, 300 PPI often gives detailed photographic and design prints. Your printer, paper, artwork and viewing distance still affect the finished result.
Posters and displays viewed from farther away can often use a lower PPI. Around 150 PPI may be practical for some large-format work, while screen graphics commonly use 72 or 96 PPI.
A 3000 × 2000 pixel photograph at 300 PPI prints at 10 × 6.67 inches. For an A4 print at 300 PPI, convert 210 × 297 mm to inches, then multiply by 300: approximately 2480 × 3508 pixels.
